Collin Sims, Interim DA, reports that on February 28, 2024, Slidell City Court Judge Bryan D. Haggerty found 62 YO Karl Evans of Slidell guilty as charged of domestic abuse battery.
Assistant District Attorney Heather Stephens, assigned to the Domestic Violence Unit under the Supervision of Roy Burns III, prosecuted the case.
Testimony at trial established that on August 12, 2023, the victim reported to the Slidell Police Department that her husband, Karl Evans, had physically assaulted her at their residence earlier that day. She said she was standing at the stove cooking eggs for herself when the defendant told her she was not allowed to use the stove. He grabbed her right wrist and dug his fingernails into her skin, causing her to drop the skillet to the floor. He then picked up the skillet and struck her with it, causing significant bruising to her arm.
Officer Devon Ferguson observed bruising and cuts to the victim’s body and documented them via photographs. The victim provided police with a video she was able to record with her cell phone during the altercation. The camera was directed at the floor so it did not capture the actual assault, but it did record the defendant threatening her.
The victim and Officer Ferguson testified at the trial.
