Wrapping up two terms, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards had his farewell address in his hometown of Amite last night.
Edwards touted accomplishments like raising teacher pay, investing in early and late childhood education, expanding Medicare, leaving the state with a budget surplus and criminal justice reform. Edwards also spoke about the challenges his administration faced in his eight years in office, including major hurricanes like Hurricane Ida and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Edwards will officially be replaced as governor on Monday when governor-elect Jeff Landry takes office.
Edwards said his prayer at the beginning of this journey and every day since was that of Solomon, just give him the wisdom to know the right thing to do and the courage to do it.
Governor Edwards said he was grateful for his time in Baton Rouge and that he was looking forward to coming home.
Edwards was joined by First Lady Donna Hutto Edwards, their daughter Sarah, and son John Miller.
