The Metropolitan Crime Commission says New Orleans not having a homicide in the first 11 days of December is the second longest streak since Hurricane Ida in 2021.
The longest was 12 days that also happened in 2023.
According to the MCC, overall homicides are down 19%, shootings are down 22%, carjackings are down 46%, and armed robbery is down 34% since this point in the year in 2022.
Officials with the MCC says the strategy of prioritizing the arrest of people illegally carrying guns and drugs is preventing those same people from being on the street to commit violent crimes. Homicides are still at a higher level than they were in earlier years but new technology like drones and crime cameras will help the department.
The MCC says a commitment from governor-elect Jeff Landry to add Louisiana State Police patrols to the city after his inauguration in January of 2024 will also help make a dent.
