President Mike Cooper and St. Tammany Parish Government issued a statement on the loss of former Madisonville Mayor Peter Gitz, who served his community for 40 years.
Cooper said St. Tammany Parish lost a steadfast and caring leader who dedicated his life to ensure that Madisonville never lost its charm. President Cooper added that Gitz created the Tchefuncte River bulkhead, launched the Wooden Boat Festival, helped open the Maritime Museum and guided Madisonville through four decades.
Earlier this year, President Cooper presented Mayor Gitz with a special recognition honoring his legacy and commitment to Madisonville.
The statement said President Mike Cooper and his wife, Catherine, join with the community in praying for Mayor Gitz’s family, friends and all who had the privilege to know and love him.
Gitz was first voted into office in the 1970s. It was a position he held for 10 terms over 40 years. In 2016, Gitz announced he would not seek reelection for an 11th term.
