Eight St. Tammany Parish residents joined the Dos Amigos Dental / Medical Missions team to provide much-needed care to remote villages in Belize.
The locals were part of the 10-person team who performed nearly 600 treatments and assessments at no charge.
Serving from this area were Michael Guevara, DDS; Gail Guevara; Ann Meyer, RN; Conrad Meyer, Stephen Cambre, DDS; Savanah Loyd; Jess Steelman & Lily Wise.
Each year, the mission teams provide free and vital care to those who face obstacles due to lack of finances and transportation.
Due to Covid restrictions, the team was unable to serve in Belize for three years, and were approved for re-entry with a shorter window than usual.
For the 2023 trip, the non-profit received a grant from the International College of Dentistry’s Global Visionary Fund to help cover the costs of dental supplies. They also received a grant from the Rotary Club of Bay St. Louis MS to help cover the costs of medicines and supplies, as well as a grant from the (former) Northminster Presbyterian Church in Pearl River, thanks to the efforts of board member Jane Triola.
The mission is currently preparing for the 33rd trip to Belize that will take place next spring.
Over 600 team members have traveled to Belize over the three decades of service, including not only medical and dental professionals, but teachers, attorneys, teenagers, engineers and other volunteers.
All team members pay for their own travel expenses and donations to the mission are tax-deductible.
