In Baton Rouge another effort by lawmakers to legalize marijuana in Louisiana has gone up in smoke.
Rep. Candace Newell of New Orleans has brought the bill up several years in a row now. Lawmakers on the Criminal Justice Committee heard her pitch yet again yesterday. With only three votes in support, HB 24 was shelved.
Meanwhile a bill that would give a life sentence for possession of 28 grams or more of fentanyl was debated at the Louisiana State Capitol. Rep. John Stefanski of Crowley has said he does not intend to go after the users but rather the suppliers. His bill was passed out of the Administration of Criminal Justice Committee with a vote of 12-1.
And finally, students in public schools could soon have the option to take a course on the Bible. HB 68 by Rep. Valerie Hodges from Denham Springs would make the course voluntary. Lawmakers on the House Education Committee heard arguments yesterday and voted to pass the bill out of committee. It now heads to the House floor.
