Yesterday Hammond Police a train accident on the southbound tracks involving one vehicle and asked residents to avoid downtown Hammond at that time as only the University Avenue and Minnesota Park railroad crossings were open.
A short time later the train was able to clear downtown Hammond.
Police said a truck was struck by the train and that the driver of the truck was able to jump out prior to the collision.
HPD said the Old Covington Highway railroad crossing will be closed for 3-5 days and advised motorists to please use an alternate route during the time it is closed.
