Yesterday Hwy 51 in Amite was shut down due to a fire at the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office Vehicle Maintenance Shop.
All northbound traffic was being diverted down Storey Road and S. Laurel St.
The fire was brought under control but heavy smoke remained.
At the time the fire was reported, the shop had been closed for approximately one hour, therefore no one was present. The Amite Fire Department, along with several other fire departments, remained on scene for several more hours.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
