Deputies arrested four men in connection with an incident that eventually led to LSU student Madison Brooks from Covington being hit and killed by a vehicle in Baton Rouge earlier this month.
Deputies charged both 18 YO Kaivon Deondre Washington of Walker, and an unidentified minor with third-degree rape. The minor is 17. 28 YO Everette Lee of Pine Grove, and 18 YO Casen Carver of Denham Springs were both charged with principle to third-degree rape, meaning they were present but did not take part in the alleged crime, according to documents regarding the arrest. Both Washington and Carver are graduates of Walker High School. Carver was a member of the baseball team.
Investigators said Carver admitted that he and the three other males went to Reggie’s Bar near the LSU campus and consumed alcohol. He said Brooks left the bar with them. He said she was very unstable on her feet and unable to speak without slurring her words. The alleged assault occurred in the car. Carver said they later dropped off Brooks in a neighborhood near where she was hit on Burbank Drive.
An attorney representing two of the people behind bars for the alleged incident claims video evidence from inside of the car will acquit his clients and the blame needs to be on the bars selling to underage drinkers.
Brooks’ blood alcohol level when she got to the hospital was nearly four times the legal limit.
LSU President William F. Tate, IV, said that the collective grief and outrage could be put into mere words and it was time for action. He added that one place to target their attention would be the place where the encounter began. Tate said all but one of the suspects involved were underage yet were able to consume alcohol at a local bar. He said their action plan will start with a deep and relentless focus on any establishment that profits off students by providing alcohol to underage individuals.
