Over the weekend the Hammond Police Street Crimes Unit was patrolling the Magazine Street area when officers observed a stolen vehicle occupied by several male subjects driving westbound on Hoover Street.
When HPD officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver immediately fled at a high rate of speed, through many blocks, moving outside the city limits, until turning down a dead-end street on McGee Road. The vehicle then left the roadway and continued behind numerous residences into an open field before it came to a stop when all occupants fled in various directions.
As several officers pursued the suspects, additional HPD officers and Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived on scene to set up a perimeter of the area.
After a period of time, officers received a report of a possible attempted carjacking near Natalbany Middle School. The school, which was hosting a sporting event, was quickly secured and put on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
The HPD SWAT team responded providing additional manpower in the search, along with the Department of Homeland Security Air and Marine Division that provided air support for officers on scene.
While searching on Fire Station Road, officers observed a half-dressed muddy male subject emerge from a wooded area near the school campus. The subject was detained and identified as 19 YO Caleb Plaisance of Hammond. Plaisance was positively identified as one of the subjects who fled from inside of the stolen vehicle. He was also found to be wanted on numerous outstanding felony charges out of the Tangipahoa and Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Offices.
After an extensive search for the remaining occupants, the search was concluded and shifted to an ongoing investigation.
