Louisiana State Police says on May 24, 2020, Trooper George B. Baker, a resident of St. Helena Parish, succumbed to injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle crash while assisting a local law enforcement agency that was in pursuit of a suspect vehicle.
Trooper Baker was with Louisiana State Police for 2 years and 4 months prior to the crash.
During the 2022 Legislative Session, a bill was passed designating a portion of LA Highway 16 in St. Helena Parish as the “Trooper George Baker Memorial Highway.”
An unveiling ceremony attended by family members, fellow troopers, and friends of Trooper Baker was held to recognize the new memorial highway bearing Trooper Baker’s name. With the help of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) and the Louisiana State Troopers Association, two roadway signs have been erected on the Trooper George Baker Memorial Highway to commemorate Trooper Baker. It is their hope that with the placement of these signs, hundreds of drivers that travel that portion of highway each day will remember the service and sacrifice of Trooper Baker.
