Yesterday a small crowd was bused into the memorial site to celebrate the life and legacy of fallen Mandeville Police Captain Vincent ‘Vinnie’ N. Liberto, Jr.
Captain Liberto was killed in the line of duty on September 20, 2019 near the intersection of U.S. 190 and LA 22.
He has now been memorialized as the U.S. 190 overpass near LA 22 has officially been named in his honor.
This could not be a public event due to the logistics of it being on a busy roadway.
One lane of traffic was closed as the crowd of family, friends, and local officials took part in a quick ceremony at the site, which features American and Marine Corps flags in honor of his service.
A larger group awaited them for more festivities off site once the lane was reopened and the renamed overpass was put back in service.
State Senator Patrick McMath and State Representative Richard Nelson helped guide the bill through the legislature last session to permanently rename the overpass after Captain Liberto.
