There’s still no reopening date for the West Pearl River Bridge on Highway 90, which has been closed since May 24 when workers with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development discovered significant deterioration of the deck supports.
Bridge inspectors are still evaluating the damage to determine the extent of the repairs.
Apparently, DOTD has closed another bridge on U.S. 90 over the Middle East Pearl, also because of deteriorated steel.
The route gets about 1,200 vehicles per day, but also serves an important role in hurricane evacuations.
Highway 90, which becomes Chef Menteur Highway in Orleans Parish, can take drivers from the Gulf Coast to New Orleans without having to get on I-10 and is often used during hurricane season evacuations or when I-10 is blocked during wrecks.
This route was used extensively earlier this year when a portion of I-10 near the state line was down to one lane.
