Over the weekend Tangipahoa Parish Fire District #1 was dispatched, along with Independence Fire Department, Roseland Fire Department, and Amite Police, to a working structure fire in the 600 block of South Third Street in Amite.
Arriving first on scene, Amite Police made a valiant attempt to rescue two reported occupants, but were overcome by smoke.
Firefighters arrived and initiated a primary search where they located and removed two occupants from the home.
Firefighters immediately rendered emergency medical care to the occupants. Acadian Ambulance arrived and firefighters assisted Acadian with patient care to the hospital.
The two patients were listed in critical condition.
Two other occupants were able to escape the home and as a precaution were transported to a local hospital. It is important to note that smoke detectors were operational and alerted the occupants to the dangerous conditions inside the home.
An investigation is underway by the Fire District #1 Fire Prevention Bureau and Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office.
