Tangipahoa Parish Superintendent Melissa Stilley is attempting to address the number of fights at local schools.
In an address to families Stilley said effective immediately students who choose to fight or instigate a fight will be placed at the Alternative School Program site for a minimum of one semester. Students who record fight on their cell phones will receive the same punishment.
Earlier this week 15 students were arrested for fighting at Hammond High Magnet School. According to TPSO Chief Jimmy Travis, the 7 boys and 8 girls were arrested following two separate altercations. 4 boys were sent to the Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center and the rest were remanded to their parents.
The school system is also changing requirements as they seek to recruit teachers. Now any bachelor’s degree will give an individual a chance to get certified to be a part of the staff at Tangipahoa Parish School System.
