Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards may be ending his statewide COVID-19 emergency declaration as of today, but Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s office has yet to decide what to do with New Orleans’ citywide vaccine mandate.
Cantrell spokesman Beau Tidwell told reporters yesterday that city health leaders will continue assessing data from Mardi Gras two weeks ago, including rates of infection, hospitalization and spread.
He said until the assessments are done, the mandate will remain intact.
Tidwell said the numbers give them cause for cautious optimism and it seems likely that in the coming weeks the city will have an announcement that they will lift the vaccination mandate. But, he said, they are not there yet.
