Yesterday President Mike Cooper announced $5 million had been secured to expand Collins Boulevard (U.S. 190) in Covington.
Cooper said the replacement and widening of the Collins Boulevard Overpass will ease congestion along U.S. 190, provide a reliable evacuation route, and ensure that citizens continue to have safe, efficient infrastructure.
The expansion includes a four-lane bridge from West Front Street to LA 437, over the Bogue Falaya and East Boston Street.
State Sen. Patrick McMath said the Bogue Falaya overpass has caused traffic congestion for decades and that in addition to the $27 million in state funding our delegation secured last session, the $5 million in federal funds will help continue the expansion of US 190.
The project was federally funded through the FY 2022 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies appropriations bill, which is expected to be approved this week.
Covington Mayor Mark Johnson said the new bridge will have a positive impact on residents from Barker’s Corner to Folsom, from Goodbee to Franklinton and that he’s very grateful to Congressman Scalise for steering this through Congress and to the State for its financial contribution to this much needed improvement.
The federal allocation will provide funding for construction of the project, which includes the widening of U.S. 190 from West Front Street to LA 25.
