Traffic cameras are a polarizing presence in New Orleans and some other Louisiana municipalities.
Now a state lawmaker is pitching a constitutional amendment that could shut them down.
State Rep. Paul Hollis of Mandeville brought the legislation forward. He takes issue with the mail-issued fines for drivers who just barely exceed speed limits. He doesn’t like how hard they are to dispute. And he dislikes the idea of cameras lurking from above, calling it Big Brother.
Hollis’ proposal would let Louisiana voters decide whether to dismantle all traffic cameras statewide.
Prospective voters remain mixed on the idea. Some argue drivers have little to worry about if they just obey driving rules. Others say the cameras mark a sneaky way of seeking money.
