New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell, joined New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson at a press conference yesterday to discuss an ongoing crime wave.
Basically, the plan they outlined is to continue with and expand on their current plan. NOPD will use state and federal resources to bolster their Violent Crimes Abatement and Investigation Team.
Ferguson also said he would re-implement district-based task forces, calling them district community action teams. These units would be proactive in their policing, with specific missions given to them by their district captains. Ferguson originally disbanded these forces in 2020 due to supervisory concerns.
Ferguson also said he is considering 12-hour patrol shifts for officers.
Meanwhile Cantrell called on the criminal justice system to hold offenders accountable for their crimes, without naming anyone specifically that she thought could do a better job of prosecuting criminals.
