The Port of New Orleans’ executive board approved a resolution at a meeting Wednesday that authorizes Port NOLA administrators to sign the paperwork needed to purchase over 1,000 acres of land in the St. Bernard Parish community of Violet.
The port plans to use that land for a $1.5 billion container terminal, which port leaders hope will bolster the New Orleans area’s shipping capabilities.
The project is generating some controversy. A nonprofit group called “Stop the Destruction of St. Bernard,” formed earlier this year to oppose the terminal and has launched a lawsuit to stop it. Members include lifelong residents who say the facility would hurt the environment and those living near it.
