With another big weekend coming up in New Orleans, the director of the New Orleans Health Department, Dr. Jennifer Avegno, is encouraging anyone who plans to celebrate on New Year’s Eve to take precautions.
She says one of the things they are seeing with Omicron is that if you are in an indoor gathering and one person has it, then almost everyone gets it.
She said masking, testing, and knowing everyone’s vaccination and booster status before or during a gathering, is a good way to keep people safe.
Right now, the city of New Orleans does not have a mask mandate, but Avegno said there are discussions happening to determine if more mitigation measures are needed as COVID-19 cases surge in Louisiana.
Avegno believes the city is in for a rough couple of weeks following Christmas and New Year’s gatherings.
She encourages people who are symptomatic or believe they have been exposed to the virus to get tested.
