New Orleans Health Department Director Dr. Jennifer Avegno spoke at a New Orleans Council committee meeting yesterday.
She touched on a number of topics regrading COVID, including whether or not it was safe to hold Mardi Gras parades.
According to Avegno, there are now 58 cases of Omicron in Louisiana, with the majority of those cases in New Orleans.
Avegno said unlike during the emergence of Delta, the city of New Orleans has a piece of machinery that will allow them to identify Omicron cases faster.
Avegno said cases and hospitalizations remain low in the city.
She said that her findings from the Krewe of Boo parade show that as long as cases are low in a community, events like parades are considered low for transmission rates.
Avegno said that as long as the community continues an aggressive approach on vaccinations and testing, Mardi Gras parades should be considered safe.
