
President Mike Cooper joins the St. Tammany Parish Council in mourning the loss of longtime Parish Councilman Steve Stefancik.
Cooper said his passion and commitment to his constituents in District 11, the Slidell area and St. Tammany Parish never wavered, and was often unmatched. Cooper asked citizens to please join his wife Catherine and himself in praying for Steve’s wife, Margaret, his family and loved ones.
Stefancik has served on the St. Tammany Parish Police Jury and Parish Council, representing District 11 in the Slidell area, since 1988. He was born and raised in Linton, Indiana and graduated from Linton High School. He served in the U.S. Navy as an Electronics Technician with a specialty in submarine RADAR. Steve was a high school teacher and worked several years as a mathematician and computer scientist for the US Navy as a civilian employee.
In addition to serving St. Tammany Parish, he served six years on the School Board of Linton Stockton School Corporation in Indiana prior to moving to Louisiana in 1984. He was employed by Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company for 28 years as the IT Senior Manager for the Space Shuttle External Tank project at NASA.
Stefancik is survived by his wife, three children and grandchildren.
In honor of his passing Governor John Bel Edwards has ordered all flags to be flown at half-staff over public buildings in St. Tammany Parish until sunset, October 6, 2021.
