The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System is now offering Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine booster shots under emergency use authorization.
This decision follows the Food and Drug Administration’s authorization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation that people aged 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after the Pfizer-BioNTech primary series.
That people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after the Pfizer-BioNTech primary series.
That people aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after the Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.
And that people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional settings may receive a booster shot of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after the Pfizer-BioNTech primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.
The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System began offering the Pfizer-BioNTech booster vaccines on September 27, to Veterans, their spouses and caregivers, and VA employees.
VA will prioritize vaccine distribution to people aged 65 years and older, residents of long-term care facilities and people aged 50-64 years with underlying conditions.
For appointments and questions, Veterans should call VA at 1-800-935-8387 extension 72819. Visit www.neworleans.va.gov/services/covid-19. The CDC advises that people can get both the COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine at the same time.
Veterans receiving care at VA who wish to get a booster shot can get both shots together during the same visit.
