Tangipahoa Parish Schools lost 15 instructional days due to Hurricane Ida and School Superintendent Melissa Stilley said school employees were excited to reunite with their students.
Stilley said the first day back post-Hurricane Ida was nearly perfect on campus, despite what some in the public may have seen on social media. A number of Facebook posts questioned how safe the schools were after reports of mold being found on some campuses.
Stilley addressed those concerns during her report to the School Board Tuesday night, urging the public to reach out to school officials instead of social media to log their concerns.
Stilley said the district contracted with a national disaster recovery agency to clean up all school and office sites to prepare them for normal operations and occupancy. From there, the district also created a Google document to itemize and track all maintenance needs and repairs—both big and small. That document is revised daily, Stilley said.
On Monday, when employees returned to campus, additional areas of concern were located and logged on the Google document.
As for the social media posts which include photos of mold, Stilley said the district cannot verify if those photos were taken in local schools. She urged the public to email the principals or other district officials if they see a concern that needs to be reported.
