Gov. John Bel Edwards held a news conference on Louisiana’s continued recovery from Hurricane Ida on Thursday, Sept. 9.
The governor said 75% of the state’s power outages from Hurricane Ida, which made landfall Aug. 29., have been restored, as of Thursday afternoon. However, Gov. Edwards said there are still 271,718 power outages statewide.
Gov. Edwards urged those who have been affected by the hurricane to apply for the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (DSNAP) benefits.
Dr. Joseph Kanter with the Louisiana Department of Health provided an update on the state’s fight against COVID-19 and said 42.6% of eligible Louisiana residents are fully vaccinated against the virus. The doctor also urged those residents who are still without power, to use generators safely. The state has reported six deaths related to carbon dioxide poisoning from generators following Hurricane Ida.
