The 22nd Judicial District Veterans Court celebrated their fourth graduating class last month.
Eight Veterans successfully completed the program and were recognized at the special ceremony.
The Honorable Raymond S. Childress, the presiding judge over the Veterans Court, thanked the graduates, their Mentors (volunteer Veterans themselves), and the entire support team including probation officers, the Clerk’s office, bailiff, Case Manager, Assistant District Attorneys, treatment representatives, and the Specialty Courts Coordinator. Also present were dignitaries from Parish and State agencies including the Secretary of the LA Department of Veterans Affairs Joey Strickland, officers of the Northshore Court Foundation and many guests.
The court works with each Veteran through behavior modification, comprehensive treatment, social support, assistance with housing, transportation, and where appropriate, expungement. The Mentors provide guidance, advice, and support to their assigned Veterans for the duration of the program.
Veterans Court is a largely successful alternative to incarceration for certain criminal defendants. Eligibility requirements are in accordance with current Federal and Louisiana statutes. Program Requirements include adherence to scheduled sessions, meetings, and appointments made by the treatment providers; medication adherence; compliance with drug and alcohol testing; and attendance at regular court appearances.
Veterans Court is voluntary, though included as a condition of probation. Benefits of successful completion may include reduction in the term of probation, dismissal of criminal charges, and reduced or suspended incarceration.
