Louisiana lawmakers will hold a historic veto override session this week after Governor John Bel Edwards vetoed more than two dozen bills.
Two proposals will draw the most attention: a ban on transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports, and the elimination of a training requirement to obtain a concealed-carry firearm permit.
This will be the first-ever veto override session since the state’s current constitution was approved in 1974.
Last week legislators had until midnight Thursday to send in ballots to make sure there was not a veto override session.
Edwards is a Democrat and Republicans control both the House and Senate. He says he sticks by his decision to veto 28 bills passed during the regular legislative session in June.
The veto override session begins July 20.
