Yesterday the Senate voted 23-14 in favor of a bill to allow a referendum vote in St Tammany to determine if voters there will allow a casino to be located in Slidell.
Vote was final passage, sending it to the Governor’s desk.
HB 702 was brought by Rep. Mary DuBuisson of Slidell. Members of the local delegation as well as St Tammany Corp and the St. Tammany Chamber of Commerce support of this bill, allowing parish residents to vote for or against the development.
Proponents say this project would have positive economic development impacts on the community including the creation of 1,700 construction jobs, 1,900 permanent jobs and an estimated $7 million in revenue for St. Tammany Parish.
Opponents include religious leaders from Slidell and lobbyists representing other casinos in Mississippi and Louisiana.
