Southwest Louisiana has been fortunate to receive donations of varying amounts from all fifty states and from other countries since Hurricane Laura’s landfall last August.
In addition to the devastation of Hurricane Laura, the region experienced another named hurricane, Category 2 Delta, then winter storm Uri, and now an historic flooding event that brought over 12 inches of rain within a 12-hour period.
Sara Judson, CEO of the Community Foundation of SWLA, says they remain committed to telling Southwest Louisiana’s story to a nationwide audience and beyond, to raise awareness of the needs for recovery and rebuilding for their communities.
This flood event, which includes a forecast of continued rain for several days, ranks as the third worst 24-hour rainfall total in the history of the city of Lake Charles. Cars and even large trucks litter the streets of Lake Charles and families who were just completing repairs to their homes and businesses nine months after Hurricane Laura’s landfall are again dealing with water damage to their property. The historic torrential rains even caused flooding to homes that had never been flooded.
People and companies who want to help the recovery and rebuilding efforts in Southwest Louisiana may contribute to the Foundation’s Emergency Relief Fund online https://www.foundationswla.org/emergency-relief or by mailing their check to P.O. Box 3125, Lake Charles, LA 70602.
