Tangipahoa Parish President Robby Miller, in partnership with Tangipahoa Parish District 8 Councilman David Vial, and the Hammond Area Recreation District #1, announced Friday that a 60-foot wide parcel of land has been donated by a generous family to build a two-lane roadway from Old Covington Highway and across Seltzer’s Creek to access Chappapeela Sports Park.
Located just north of the intersection of I-12 and Airport Road, right now there is only one route in and out of the park, which hosts an estimated 800,000 visitors per year. Vial says representatives from Tangipahoa Parish Government and the recreation board started trying to develop a plan three years ago that would alleviate congestion in and out of the park. Recently a landowner came forward, offering a 60-foot wide parcel fronting Old Covington Highway and reaching all the way back to the complex. The project calls for a brand new two-lane parish road that will include a bridge over Seltzer’s Creek and proceed south, tying in to Chappapeela’s ring road from the northeast quadrant of the sports complex.
