Yesterday at approximately 1:45 pm Hammond Fire was called to the intersection of Sun Lane and Harvey Street for a vehicle accident involving a gas line.
Just before HFD arrived, the vehicle ignited the gas line and fire engulfed a vehicle. HPD was able to move the occupant from the vehicle and moved him to safety. HFD began protecting a house and 2 cars which were several feet from the fire. HFD used Ladder 11 and multiple hand lines to protect the exposures.
Atmos gas service arrived shortly after and turned the gas off. The fire was extinguished once the gas line was off.
The driver was transported to North Oaks Medical center with minor injuries. No other injuries were reported and there was minor damage to the residence and one of the nearby vehicles.
