On March 10, at approximately 11:22 pm, the Hammond Police Department responded to a call of a pedestrian being struck on Highway 190 West.
48 YO Jay Chenier of LaPlace was walking westbound on the shoulder of Highway 190 West, when he was struck by a driver going westbound in the right lane. Chenier was wearing all black clothing and nothing reflective. The driver stated that she saw a pedestrian walking on the shoulder, but as she got closer, he stepped out into the travel lane.
Chenier was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing at this time. The driver voluntarily submitted to a blood test. Neither speed nor alcohol is suspected as factors in this collision.
