Five years ago, New Orleans officials signed a contract with Louisiana State Police to have troopers patrol the French Quarter. At the start of this year, there were 15 troopers, during the pandemic the number has dropped. As it stands now, in the new year, troopers will no longer patrol the French Quarter with officials saying the city can no longer afford the $6 million contract budget. Instead of those state troopers, the city hopes to make do with three overtime NOPD officers, one officer during the day and two at night. But even that smaller number of officers dedicated to the French Quarter depends on approval by voters to renew a quarter-penny sales tax.
