The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation has granted $1 million to the Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana to quicken relief across areas upended by Hurricane Laura. The gift is among two of the largest to the Foundation’s Hurricane Relief and Recovery Fund, which has raised more than $5.5 million in about three weeks since Laura, which was the fiercest hurricane to hit the region in 150 years. The Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana has already issued more than $850,000 to nonprofits in the area. All the funding so far is paying to cover immediate needs — food, water, tools and other essentials to stabilize people so they can start to rebuild. The awards have been sent across impacted areas, up to Union Parish and down to Cameron on the Gulf Coast. Organizations that have received grants include Salvation Army Lake Charles, Union Parish Library, Catholic Charities of Acadiana, CareHelp of Sulphur and Carey Baptist Association.
