Louisiana recorded its largest daily coronavirus case spike since April, and the mayor of Baton Rouge announced yesterday that she is requiring people to wear masks inside businesses in hopes of stemming the spread of the disease. 2,083 new cases of the COVID-19 disease caused by the coronavirus were confirmed over the past day in Louisiana residents, and hospitalizations continued to tick upward. 18 deaths were reported for a total of 3,130. 98% of the cases were community spread and 49% were among young people 29 and under. The state is regularly lodging around 1,000 new positive cases each day, numbers that are starting to look like early April. The trend concerns public health experts who say Louisiana’s once successful efforts to slow infections are being undermined by a public that is ignoring recommended precautions.
